Connect by USB

For Canon EOS bodies that keep the count out of their photos, like the 7D Mark II, 5D Mark III and 70D. Works in desktop Chrome or Edge.

Read-only. Camera settings stay as they are.

USB setup for Mac, Windows and Linux

Charge the battery, switch the camera on, turn Wi-Fi off and use a USB cable that carries data. Many micro-USB cables only charge. Quit EOS Utility, Lightroom, Photos and Image Capture first.

Mac: right before you click Connect, run killall -9 PTPCamera ptpcamerad in Terminal. macOS grabs cameras the moment they're plugged in.

Windows: Windows puts Canon cameras on its own driver, which Chrome can't use. Switch it to Windows' built-in WinUSB driver in Device Manager, no download needed. Step-by-step Windows guide. Or skip the computer and use Chrome on an Android phone with a USB OTG adapter.

Linux, ChromeOS and Android Chrome with a USB OTG adapter: usually works as is.

Which cameras work

  • NikonPhoto

Every Nikon DSLR and Z body writes the count into each photo. Z models with a mechanical shutter also report mechanical actuations separately.

  • SonyPhoto

α7, α9, α1, α6000 series and A-mount bodies store the count in each photo. Use an unedited JPEG or ARW.

  • Pentax / RicohPhoto

DSLRs and K-mount bodies store the count in each photo.

  • CanonPhoto or USB

EOS R5, R6, R6 Mark II, the 1D Mark II and 1Ds Mark II, and the PowerShot G5 X Mark II store it in photos. Most other EOS bodies keep it out of their files, so connect by USB instead.

  • FujifilmPhoto

Recent X and GFX bodies store an image count in each photo. It can reset to 0 after a firmware update.

  • OM System / Olympus, Panasonic, LeicaNot readable

These bodies don't put the count anywhere a computer can read it. Olympus and OM bodies show it in a hidden service menu on the camera.

How it works

  1. Give it a photo or a camera. An original file from the memory card, or a Canon plugged in by USB.
  2. Your browser reads the count. ExifTool runs inside the page and reads the camera's private maker notes. Over USB, the page asks the camera for its counter.
  3. See it against the rated life. Where the maker published a rating, the meter shows how much of it has been used.

Questions

What is a shutter count?

It's the number of times the camera's shutter has fired, also called the actuation count. It works like a car's odometer: the best single sign of how much a camera has been used. Mechanical shutters are rated for a set number of cycles, so the count tells you roughly how much life is left.

Is ShutterOdo free?

Yes. There's no account, no app to install and no limit on how many cameras you check.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The reader is ExifTool compiled to WebAssembly, and it runs inside your browser tab. Your photo is read from your own disk and never sent to a server. The only download is the reader itself, about 8 MB, the first time you check a photo.

Why can't it read my Canon from a photo?

Most Canon EOS DSLRs, like the 7D Mark II, 5D Mark III and 80D, don't write the count into their photos. Canon keeps it inside the camera. For those bodies, connect the camera by USB in Chrome or Edge and ShutterOdo asks the camera directly. The EOS R5, R6 and R6 Mark II do include it in their photos.

What's a good shutter count for a used camera?

Compare the count with the model's rated life. A camera at 20% of its rating has used a small part of its expected life. Shutters often run well past the rating and some fail early, so treat it as a guide, not a guarantee. See rated shutter life by model.

Does the electronic shutter add to the count?

It depends on the camera. Canon's R5, R6 and R6 Mark II count electronic and mechanical shots together. Some Nikon Z bodies record mechanical shots separately, and ShutterOdo shows both. Sony bodies may not count silent shooting.

Can a shutter count be faked?

A count read from a photo can be edited by someone determined to do it. When buying, ask the seller to take a new photo of something you choose, like a note with your name, and send the original file. A shutter replacement also resets the count, which is fine if it was done by a service center and documented.

Which browsers does it work in?

Photo reading works in any current browser on desktop or phone. USB reading needs Chrome or Edge on a desktop, or Chrome on Android with a USB OTG adapter. Safari and Firefox don't support WebUSB.
